Papis Dahaba's first experience with African music began quite early in his childhood, as his mother danced to traditional Senegalese music in the performance group Kilimandiaro.
Every evening, little Papis accompanied his mother to watch her dance rehearsals and performances with the artist group. Thus, he learned to love traditional music and its rhythms at an early age. He also learned early to play these rhythms of traditional West African music himself, also because his father is a professional musician and instrument maker, Kora and Djembe player.
Papis Dahaba made his first great progress together with his uncle, the djembe virtuoso Ibrahima Touré, with whom he practiced, improvised and performed for a long time.
Later, Papis had the opportunity to train with the well-known kora and djembe masters Seckou Keita and Mokoulo Savane, especially on the djembe.
In traditional Sewourba music, Papis finally began to contribute and professionalize his musical talent in the Senegalese artistic troupes Lamine Sane, Papis Kouyate and Papy Sow. In this process, Papis also learned to play the dreamy African harp, the kora, under the master Papis Kouyate.
In addition to the djembe, Papis plays traditional Senegalese music primarily on the traditional sabar drums (a drum similar to the djembe), whose playing he further perfected under the drum masters Abdoulaye Badji, Mamadou Lamine Maiga and Papis Sora Cisshokho, so that today he is in an exchange with them on an artistic level!
So it happened that the still quite young Papis already played in many places in Senegal and beyond its borders. He played in Guinée Bissau, Gambia and in many towns and villages in Senegal.
Especially often he played at the Abene Festival, and in various clubs in Abene and other festivals like the Freedom Sound Festival, supporting well known musicians like Sousou and the Maher Cissokho Golden Kora Band at their concerts in Senegal.
In Germany, Papis Dahaba had won the 2nd prize in a musician competition at the S'Phinxtfest in Heggelbach in 2017.
In Inzigkofen, Papis Dahaba gives an annual workshop for djembe.
In Germany Papis plays mainly in the band constellations Kandare Diebiaté and Memoire. In Gomadingen at the Sternberg Community Papis plays with his djembe and kora a leading role in the fortnightly singing circle "Bhajan and more", initiated by Andreas Kaufmann!
Papis contributes to the Orchestra of Cultures Stuttgart primarily with his drumming and singing talent.
His current big dream is the creation of his own album, in which he can also realize himself with various instruments, such as the self-taught guitar.
